North Carolina State University uses a questionnaire called "The Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire" to get input from its students in order to assess their learning styles. The students answer the questions, each of which require them to choose between two different answers. For instance, one question on the assessment asks whether the student understands something better after he tries it out or after he thinks it through. The students fill out the online questionnaire in order to get an assessment.
At the University of Minnesota Duluth, students have the option of getting an online assessment of their learning style, or dropping into the university's Career Service Center to interact with a person and get an assessment. The university also provides its students links to a variety of input on learning styles so that they can understand their style better. This includes a database of 50 major theories on learning and instruction.
Louisiana State University offers some self-tests for students to take in order to assess their learning styles. One test determines whether the student has a dominant left brain or right brain. The test results also give input to the student about what the test results mean for her. Another test classifies the student's learning style based on what senses he prefers to rely on in order to process input and learn. For instance, the student could rely on his sight to learn, or be more of an aural learner, relying on auditory input.
In addition to helping students learn how best to go about their learning, learning styles also help teachers understand their students better. This will help teachers in their classroom interaction with students. One method of personality assessment that a number of universities use is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Those who are sensing types, based on this test, tend to learn something by directly observing tangible realities. On the other hand, those who use their intuition prefer to get an impression about something and imagine the possibilities.
