Write down the question your thesis answers. For example, "What is heart-healthy eating?" Or "What are the benefits of heart-healthy eating?" Write this at the top of a piece of paper; you will use the remainder of the paper to brainstorm.
Brainstorm ideas. List the major benefits of heart-healthy eating, ways heart-healthy eating plays a role in society and anything else that comes to mind when you think of heart-healthy eating. Remember that there are no bad ideas when it comes to brainstorming; you simply want to get everything out on paper.
Develop your argument. Using the ideas from your brainstorming session, decide what it is that you want to argue in your paper. For example, you might want to talk about the importance of teaching the benefits of heart-healthy eating to children.
Write your statement. Use specific language and an authoritative voice to write your statement. A statement such as "Eating healthy reduces the risk of heart disease" is too broad, and doesn't pose an argument, since it is merely stating a proven fact. Develop a more developed thesis statement, such as: "Heart-healthy eating should be implemented in preschools because teaching healthy eating early on can reduce risk of heart disease." Now you have a statement that people can either agree or disagree with.
