Type the word "Bibliography" at the top of the page in your word processor. Center and underline this word to create the header.
Place all of your sources in alphabetical order, by the authors' last names, on a scratch sheet of paper. There is no need to list out the entire citation on this step, just list an author's last name and what type of source he created, such as a journal article or book. For multiple authors, use the last name of the first author listed. For books with a translator or editor, use the translator's or editor's last name.
Use the "Chicago Manual of Style" guidelines to format each source. The style guidelines are available for free online at the website for the "Manual" (chicagomanualofstyle.org). Each source will be listed alphabetically by the author's last name, then the title of the work will be cited and finally the city of publication, the publisher and the year of publication. Each type of source will require a slightly different listing of information. For instance, for websites you must list the name of the website, the title of the page or article on the website, the date the site was last modified and the URL for the specific page or article. For example, a book with one author would look like this:
Pollan, Michael. The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. New York: Penguin, 2006.
A website citation will look like this:
Google. "Google Privacy Policy." Last modified March 11, 2009. http://www.google.com/intl/en/privacypolicy.html.
Cite all of your sources as they appear in your alphabetized list from Step 2, and remember to italicize the titles of books, such as the Omnivore's Dilemma (our formatting doesn't allow for it here).
Check that each citation follows commas and periods exactly. A citation which does not contain a period after the author's name will look unfinished and unprofessional.
The text of a single citation should be single spaced, with any line after the first line of each citation being indented. Place a double-space between each individual citation. There should be two spaces after each period and a single space after commas.
