This abstract of the research paper is a short synopsis of the paper. It helps researchers quickly determine the relevance of the paper to their research. The word count is restricted, usually between 100 and 500 words. Introduce the topic, explain the research question and your goals and briefly describe the methodology, results and discussion.
A good introduction has three parts and includes your motivation and background on the topic, such as a summary of current literature about the topic; the focus of the paper and what you're trying to achieve; and a synopsis of the various sections and your hypothesis or thesis statement.
Describe the design and methodology of your research. There should be enough details that another researcher can duplicate your work. You do not need to include details about basic, well-known procedures and standard techniques. Relate the steps you took and how you accomplished them, including any pertinent diagrams and equipment specifications.
Include the data that proves your point, such as graphs or tables for quantitative research, or a discussion for qualitative research. Provide comments that link the information together for the reader.
Explain and elaborate on your findings as they relate to your thesis statement, and add personal interpretation. Address each point individually and link it back to your introduction. Relate your findings to other existing research, suggest improvements, recommend the direction of future research and comment on flaws that affected your results.
Document every research source in APA, MLA or an assigned format. Readers can consult the references for further information or use the information to replicate your work.
