Top Undergraduate Colleges & Universities for Physical Education

Coaches, physical education teachers, team managers, personal fitness trainers, and recreational leaders and managers are just a few career paths which require a degree in physical education. Many careers will require bachelor's degree or higher, while positions involving teaching will require certification. Most colleges and universities offer physical education degrees; however, the top schools will provide students with an in depth curriculum in anatomy and biology and ample opportunities for hands-on experience.

    • Ranked fourth best education college in the nation for 2014 by "U.S. News & World Report," the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Education offers students interested in physical education several options to choose from. Students may choose from a B.S. in athletic training and B.S. in kinesiology and health education. Students conduct in-depth study in anatomy and biology through courses such as Biomechanical Analysis of Movement and Applied Human Anatomy. The school offers several opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience through fitness challenges, community projects and camps.

    Michigan State University

    • Michigan State University’s College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology offers two undergraduate degree programs. Students may choose a B.S. degree in athletic training or kinesiology. Ranked top secondary education school by "U.S. News & World Report" for 2014, each program offers students exposure to state-of-the-art facilities, research in athletic training and cutting edge equipment. Upon completion of the athletic training degree, students are eligible for certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. All programs offer advanced coursework such as advanced biomechanics and movement development. Hands-on experience is gained through clinical rotations within the school and in secondary school settings. Students may also choose to add additional coursework in the field of adapted fitness and personal training to further their career options.

Students may teach after completing a teacher education program in physical education or a physical activity specialist certification. Students are provided with several extracurricular opportunities such as study abroad programs, student organizations, co-ops, and a physical education club.
