How to Denote Telepathic Dialogue in Writing

Telepathy is the ability to read an individuals mind or, conversely, to communicate with mind to mind with another individual. Needless to say, telepathy is not real, but it appears occasionally in fiction writing (especially in the science fiction or fantasy genres). Denoting telepathic dialogue requires that you obey the rules for normal dialogue, and then make a clear difference between when a character is communicating verbally and when they are communicating telepathically.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow all rules for normal dialogue. It is important that your normal, spoken dialogue is noted correctly so that telepathic dialogue is seen as different. This includes using quotation marks, using a new paragraph when you switch speakers and using speech verbs.

    • 2

Use a clear distinction to mark a difference between telepathic dialogue and spoken dialogue. One way to do this is to put telepathic dialogue in italics, as opposed to quotation marks.

    • 3

Introduce telepathic dialogue with a verb of thought, as opposed to a verb of speech. Instead of saying "he says," use a verb like "thinks" or "projects."
