Tips on Taking the Disabilities CST

CST Disabilities is short for Students With Disabilities CST (60). It is a test offered in the State of New York by the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE). The goal of the test is to make sure teachers understand students with disabilities, how to asses them and how to work within a collaborative environment. Any test can be nerve-wracking, but there are guides to review and tips to follow for studying and taking the test.
  1. The NYSTCE Study Guide

    • The most useful document is the Students With Disabilities CST (60) study guide. It includes an overview of the test, what its objectives are, how the test is set up, what is asked on the test, general test-taking tips and how the test is scored. The guide is offered through the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations website.

    Commercial Study Guide

    • Also available is a commercial study guide from XAM called "NYSTCE CST: Students With Disabilities 060." The guide contains the 17 skills tested and has a host of sample multiple-choice questions. Using the book to prepare will ease the fear of the unknown in any testing situation and leave you prepared to answer questions on the test.

    Working With Practice Tests

    • Review any sample testing questions and quiz yourself right at the beginning of your studying. Doing this will allow you to know where you are strongest and where you still need to study and practice. After you have studied, take the test again, or find a new set of questions, to see how you have improved. Taking the practice test more than once will also drive in an innate understanding of how questions are worded, what is expected and how to answer under specific question formats. The CST asks questions in a multiple-choice format and essay format, so make sure to brush up on any rusty essay writing skills.

    Using the Study Guides

    • The NYSTCE study guide has an extensive bulleted list of what test takers should know going into the test. A helpful method is to go under each bullet point and write your own study guide about what you know about each topic based on what will be on the test. The act of writing and researching will help drill the principles into your head, and you will have something that is easy to review.

If you learn best in a collaborative environment, arrange a study group and quiz each other on the multiple-choice questions. Write some mock essays that might be on the test and critique each other on the essays. This will facilitate more interaction with the material and thus increase retention. It will also hone or refresh your on-the-fly essay writing skills

    At the Test

    • The NYSTCE guide has some important test taking tips, such as not rushing through the test without reading the directions. Nerves may make you want to finish early, but completing the test correctly is important. Also, do not rush through the test because each testing session is four hours long. If you do not know something, return to it, as later questions can sometimes jog your memory. Always go back and review your work when finished.
