Disadvantages & Advantages of Online Learning

Online learning (often referred to as distance learning or e-learning) has become an increasingly popular choice for many people pursuing different levels of education. Online learning requires the student to participate and learn virtually via a computer, as opposed to in a traditional classroom environment. Online learning is not for everyone, so it's important for prospective students to determine whether or not it's something they'd like to pursue.
  1. Geography

    • Online learning provides flexibility as students are able to work when it's convenient for them and from any location (as long as they have a computer and Internet access).

    Pace

    • Students can learn at a pace that's suitable to them, and in many cases the program or degree can be completed in less time than at a traditional school.

    Anonymity

    • There are fewer distractions and it can be less intimidating to participate since there's an anonymity factor.

    Networking

    • Students have the opportunity to connect and work alongside people from various locations and walks of life.

    Considerations

    • Students whom have trouble managing their time may find the lack of structure overwhelming.

    Effects

    • Students don't have the chance to interact personally with their classmates and instructors, and the content of some classes may be especially hard to gauge online.

    Warning

    • The online learning program must be accredited; if not, the degree may not be considered valid.
