Online Fire Fighter Training

Aspiring and established firefighters will find free training courses online that also sometimes provide continuing education credit. The sources include federal and state governments, and higher education institutions.
  1. Federal Sources

    • The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides more than 70 free online courses, with continuing education credit, through its Emergency Management Institute. The National Fire Academy offers online courses and executive briefings on fire suppression basics. The National Wildland Coordinating Group offers four online classes. Students must have a local administrator for each class.

    State Sources

    • Some states organize training schools for active firefighters. These may be state sponsored or offered by university extension services. Examples include the California Fire and Rescue Training Authority, and the Fire and Rescue Training Institute through the University of Missouri.

    Private Sources

    • Many private organizations, such as industry associations and publications, provide free and paid online training. Fire Engineering Magazine offers courses for continuing education credit though its FE University. The Fire and Engineering Network offers free fire training videos, developed to conform with federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration standards.
