There are two main components to CNA training, which are usually divided into classes and courses. Classes are cpmprised of reading material and viewing demonstrations or videos, and therefore may be completed online. Courses require hands-on training in a medical or lab facility and must be completed in person.
There are free CNA classes available online, but in many cases these will provide students with an introduction to the subject matter only and cannot be used for the purposes of receiving certification. There are other classes available online for a fee that may provide suitable training for prospective CNAs. Before registering for any training, check with your local department of health to find out what is required to become a certified CNA.
In some areas the Red Cross provides free or low-cost CNA training. Check with local hospitals or nursing homes; some will offer free training and will even pay your test fees if you agree to take a job with them when you receive your certification. Reduced rate training programs may also be available from local adult education or vocational schools.
