How to Tell if an Online University Is Accredited

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education maintains an online database of the postsecondary educational institutions and programs that are accredited by an approved accrediting agency or state approval agency. According to the database website, the U.S. Secretary of Education recognizes these agencies as "reliable authorit[ies] as to the quality of postsecondary education." Accrediting agencies are private regional and national organizations dedicated to ensuring the quality of higher education.
