This will typically take four years of full-time study. During this time, you will learn the theory and practice of nursing, including clinical skills, patient care, and medical terminology.
_Step 2: Gain experience as an RN_
After graduating from nursing school, you will need to gain experience working as an RN in a clinical setting. This can be done in a hospital, clinic, or other healthcare facility. Most states require RNs to complete at least two years of clinical experience before they can apply to anesthesiologist assistant (AA) programs.
_Step 3: Complete an accredited AA program_
Once you have gained enough clinical experience, you can apply to an accredited AA program. These programs typically take two to three years to complete and include coursework in anesthesia, surgery, physiology, and pharmacology. During this time, you will also complete clinical rotations in an operating room setting.
_Step 4: Become licensed as an AA_
After graduating from an AA program, you must pass the National Board of Anesthesiologists (NBOA) exam in order to become licensed as an AA. This exam tests your knowledge of anesthesia and surgery and is required in all states.
_Step 5: Continue your education and training_
AAs are required to complete continuing education credits every two years in order to maintain their licenses. These credits can be earned by attending conferences, taking courses, or reading journals. AAs may also choose to pursue additional training, such as a fellowship in a specialized area of anesthesia.
