Requirements for LSU Medical School Admission

The Louisiana State University School of Medicine is part of the LSU Health Sciences Center, which also includes the allied health, dentistry and nursing schools. In 2009, a total of 687 students applied to the medical school and 193 were accepted, with a slightly larger percentage of males than females. Applicants must have completed at least 90 hours of undergraduate work with grades of C or better. The medical school, founded in 1931, is located in New Orleans.
  1. Subjects

    • The LSU Medical School requires applicants to have completed eight semester hours of general/ inorganic chemistry with laboratory and eight semester hours of organic chemistry with laboratory. Students are also required to have eight hours of physics and eight hours of biology, both with lab. Six semester hours of English are required. The school recommends that prospective students take other science courses such as anatomy and cell biology, and courses in the humanities such as philosophy and psychology.

    Testing

    • The school requires applicants to take the Medical College Admission Test. The test is offered several times a year at hundreds of locations throughout the United States. Applicants can register online through the link in the Resources section of this article. You must take the MCAT by September to be eligible for admission in the fall of the next calendar year.

    Application

    • Applicants must apply to the college online through the American Medical College Application Service. They must also complete the LSU Secondary Application to the School of Medicine, which also must be done online. See the links in the Resources section.

    Letters of Recommendation

    • Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from professors who have instructed them in science or math. Applicants who have been out of school for an extended period may submit letters from people with whom they work. The school recommends that one of those letters be from the applicant's supervisor. The school also says it is "highly desirable" for applicants not to have been out of school for more than two years before submitting an application.
