How to Get into Pharmacy School

According to the Bureau of Labor, employment opportunities for pharmacists will rise 17 percent through 2018, mainly due to the demand of an increasingly aging population. Pharmacy schools have organized themselves by streamlining and creating a standardized admission process called the Pharmacy College Application Service, or PharmCAS. To get into pharmacy school, ensure you meet the prerequisites and adhere to the PharmCAS application instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply through PharmCAS. Create an account online at pharmcas.org or contact the organization directly for a paper submission or inquires at 617-612-2050. The service's mailing address is P.O. Box 9109, Watertown, MA 02471.

    • 2

Apply by the deadline, March 1st, for the upcoming school year. Send in your application fee at the same time as when you apply.

    • 3

Follow the designated school's admission instructions carefully. Read the Pharmacy School Admission Requirements (PSAR) document, published for each school year by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Find your school from the list provided in the document and adhere to its admission instructions. Each pharmacy school varies slightly from another with regards to required supplemental documents, minimum GPA scores and in some instances, additional application fees.

    • 4

Prove you've met the prerequisite course list. Arrange to have your sealed official transcripts from all attended U.S. accredited institutions sent directly to PharmCAS. Each of the 120 pharmacy schools have their own list of courses required to have passed prior to submitting your application. Find your school's pre-required course list in the PSAR document.

    • 5

Send to PharmCAS any additional school requirements, such as letters of references and foreign transcript evaluation reports.

    • 6

Take and pass any standardized aptitude tests that your desired school requires. According to PSAR, two thirds of the pharmacy schools require taking the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT). Some require a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or Test of Spoken English (TSE). You must ask the testing agency to submit your test results to PharmCAS.
