Neurology PhD Programs

Neurologists are medical doctors specially trained in diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system, including a number of diseases that affect the muscles, nerves, brain and spinal cord. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects for physicians and surgeons such as neurologists are very good, particularly in rural or low-income areas. For those who are serious about making a foray into the field, there are several schools around the country with excellent neurology programs.
  1. Boston University Department of Neurology

    • The Neurology Department at Boston University's School of Medicine has three primary components to its mission statement: providing top-notch, state-of-the-art medical care to patients with neurological disorders; contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the area of clinical neurological research; and training physicians with the skills and tools needed to deliver comprehensive care in the field. In pursuit of a doctoral degree, students will learn about ever-evolving methods to diagnose and treat disorders that include Huntington's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, multiple sclerosis, inherited ataxias, strokes, sleep disorders, epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders among others. Students can draw on the knowledge of an expert faculty with real world experience, while hands-on clinical training and residency work is usually performed at either Boston Medical Center or the Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center.

University of Pennsylvania Department of Neurology

    • Students who decide to pursue their postgraduate degree in neurology at the Penn School of Medicine will start their first year of education by learning theory and application in lectures and small group seminars. Then, during the second year, students begin hands-on clinical training by performing a clerkship at one of the following locations: the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Hospital or Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Each student is assigned to either an outpatient clinic or an inpatient service, depending on their own specified career goals, with learning sessions held once a week for approximately four hours each. About a dozen students each year also elect to advance to a residency program upon earning their degree. In addition, neurology sub-specialties offered at the school include neuropathology, neuroradiology, otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology.

    Washington University Department of Neurology

    • The Department of Neurology at Washington University's School of Medicine offers a four-year doctoral program that trains future physicians in basic and clinical neurological sciences. First-year students gain knowledge in a classroom setting taught by faculty from departments such as Anatomy and Neurobiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. Second-year students then focus on studying the diseases of the nervous system, from Tourette Syndrome to Parkinson's Disease to choroid plexus papilloma. This curriculum integrates parts of neurology, neurosurgery and neuropathology. In the third year, students begin a four-week rotating clerkship at a local hospital or medical facility, which provides experience in the practice of pediatric neurology, adult neurology and neurosurgery. The fourth year is reserved for electives, whether focusing on a sub-specialty area or developing educational materials for use by patients and health care professionals alike.
