The Historical Black Colleges for Medical Degrees

Historical black colleges provide medical students with access to a research-based education and leadership from renowned faculty in the medical field. The medical programs stress the importance of providing service and education to local communities. Graduates from these medical programs complete residencies in a variety of fields from surgical to family medicine.
  1. Meharry Medical College

    • Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, has a school of medicine and school of dentistry. Eighty students are accepted into the medical school annually. The school's curriculum focuses on family and internal medicine, preventative, occupational and psychiatric medicine. There are two post-doctorate programs in the dentistry school, general practice and surgical. Meharry was founded in 1876 with the aid of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The school employs 218 faculty members who are leaders in the health care field. Over 786 students attend the college in 2011.

    Howard University

    • Howard University's College of Medicine was founded in 1868 and "produces a significant number of the nation's minority physicians." Howard is located in Washington, D.C., and enrolls diverse students from around the world into its medical program. The school focuses on serving underprivileged communities and populations. The medical school researches the latest trends in medical care to provide current medical facts to its students. Howard supports students by offering instructional support, student consultation and curriculum evaluations. The Graduate Medical Education prepares residents for both clinical practice and community service.

    Morehouse University

    • Morehouse University is a traditionally male college in Atlanta, Georgia; the medical school does accept females. In 1981, its medical school became the first medical school established at a historically black college and university in the twentieth century. The medical school offers seven residency programs: family and preventative medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery and psychiatry. Morehouse works closely with research institutes such as the Cardiovascular Research Institute and the Neuroscience Institute.

    Charles Drew University

    • Charles Drew University of Los Angeles is located in the Watts-Willowbrook section. The university's name is credited to Dr. Charles R. Drew, an African-American physician famous for his work in blood preservation. The medical school's mission is to deliver health care to underserved populations through research and modern health policies. Each year, 24 students are accepted into the medical program. Medical students in the third and fourth years are required to complete a research thesis project. The student presents his research at the annual medical student research colloquium held each spring.
