Admission Costs to Yale Law School

Admittance to a Yale Law School places you in a small, elite group that includes former United States Presidents and Supreme Court justices. The next step after admittance is to calculate how much it is going to cost to attend Yale Law School. According to Yale Law School, about 80 percent of its students qualify for some form of financial aid and almost 50 percent of students qualify for financial need-based grants. All costs listed here are as of 2011.
  1. The Three-Year Juris Doctor (J.D.) Program

    • Cost for a single student per term is $35,225. The cost per year is $70,450. Assuming the costs do not change over the three-year period, you will pay $211,350 for the three years. The cost includes $48,500 for tuition, $1,100 for books and $1,900 for university hospitalization coverage. Administrative and activities fees are $2,250. The cost of room, board and personal expenses is $16,700 for single students and $22,900 ($6,200 more) for married students. Including the extra cost for room, board and fees, a married student will pay $76,650 per year and $38,325 per term. Assuming the costs do not change over the three-year period, a married student will pay $229,950 for the three years.

    The One Year LL.M. Course

    • The Master of Laws (LL.M.) course shares the same yearly costs as the J.D. Program. The total cost for this course is $35,225 per term and $70,450 per year for a single student. The total cost for a married student to take this course is $38,325 per term and $76,650 per year.

    The One Year M.S.L. Program

    • The Master of Studies in Law (M.S.L.) degree program also shares the same yearly costs as the J.D. Program. The total cost for this one-year program is $35,225 per term and $70,450 per year for a single student. The total cost for a married student to take this one-year program is $38,325 per term and $76,650 per year.

    The J.S.D. Program

    • The Doctor of the Science of Law (J.S.D.) program requires two years for completion, but only one year in residency. The student can complete the first year as an LL.M. student, so LL.M. course fees would apply to the first year. For the second year, when residency is not required, J.S.D. program students pay $9,250 for tuition and a $350 registration fee per term for a total of $9,600 per term and $19,200 per year. The total cost for the two-year J.S.D. program, assuming costs do not change, is $89,650 for a single student and $95,850 for a married student.
