Prerequisites for Studying Legal Studies at ANU

Established in 1946, the Australian National University (ANU) was built to help the nation's future leaders redefine the country's national identity after World War II. With more than six colleges of academic study, undergraduate and graduate students can study everything from arts and social sciences to business, medicine and law. While the prerequisites for general admission are a part of the basic requirements for all students, there are additional requirements for students looking to make a career in law.
  1. Completion of Secondary Education

    • While the ANU College of Law does not require any prerequisite courses or tertiary subjects for admission, all candidates must complete the requirements of general admission to the university. One of the most important parts of the application package for students seeking admission to the College of Law's undergraduate program is the official Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Students who feel that their scores may be too low for admission are encouraged to take the supplemental uniTEST. Although possession of a law or legal studies undergraduate degree is encouraged, it is not required. However, completion of an undergraduate degree program is required.

    Language

    • While there are no specific prerequisite courses or specific degrees required for pursuing law studies at ANU, it is imperative that prospective students are fluent in English. All students intending to study law must be able to communicate clearly in English to be considered for admission. Fluency includes clear, concise writing, as well as fluent oral presentation. International students who claim English as a second language may be subject to examination.

    Application & Other Forms

    • Arguably the most important part of the general admission package, the online application must be completed in its entirety for admission. Through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) website (uac.edu.au), students can search for courses, fill out any needed paperwork for admission and financial aid and pay application fees. The UAC also provides students with a detailed checklist of all needed materials and information to help ensure that all paperwork is processed in time for registration.

    Choosing a Course of Study

    • Although law school admission is mainly directed at graduate students looking to study the law, many undergraduates who are sure about a future career in law can apply for dual degree program. In conjunction with the College of Arts & Sciences, ANU's College of Law offers undergraduates a few pre-set combined programs that would allow students to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts or Science and a Bachelor of Laws. However, applicants of combined programs must state this intention in the undergraduate admissions process, as there are certain courses that must be taken to fulfill the requirements for the dual degrees.
