Do Judges need a law degree in NY State?

In New York State, to become a judge in most courts, a law degree is required. There are some very limited exceptions, such as for certain specialized courts or lower-level courts where specific experience might substitute, but generally, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school is a prerequisite.
