How to Close a Personal Statement

Writing a personal statement for entry into graduate school can be a stressful process. However, perhaps the most difficult part can be producing a solid, concise and informative concluding paragraph. The conclusion can be the most vital part of an essay; it is the last part that a reviewer reads and it is your opportunity to summarize all of your experience, skills and purpose in applying. Because your conclusion holds such weight, it is important for you to learn how to write an effective and stand-out paragraph.

Instructions

    • 1

Review what you have written in your statement. Write down a few key points you would like to highlight in your conclusion. Include only one or two bullet points from each paragraph. Examples include a bullet point with a prominent aspect of your experience, one about why you're interested in the program and one identifying your interests moving forward.

    • 2

Determine how the work you will do in the program has greater purpose. Perhaps your interest in education could change the lives of students, or your design plans could contribute new elements of architecture to the program. Develop a way to explain how your current or future work has relevance in today's world. Often, reviewers seek applicants who have tremendous faith in their goals and studies.

    • 3

Begin writing your conclusion. Use your first sentence or two to stress why you are confident that this particular program will assist you in achieving your professional goals. This is an important opportunity to explain why you would benefit from the program while it benefits from you.

    • 4

Briefly mention the major points you want to emphasize in a summary of about two to three sentences. Also, use this space to concisely explain how your past experience has prepared you for the program. These are all simple yet important ideas that you want to stick in the reviewer's mind after she has finished reading your conclusion.

    • 5

Write your last sentence, which is perhaps the most important one in the personal statement. In just one or two sentences, explain how your educational and professional goals can help contribute to your field of interest. Tying your work to a greater purpose such as your field achieves a great effect as the concluding sentence of an essay. When written effectively, its message may be the primary point remembered about your statement. Hence, it can be the very part that means acceptance versus rejection.
