How much schooling is needed to become a pediatrician after college degree?

To practice as a pediatrician, one needs a medical degree from an accredited medical school and successfully complete additional training through a residency program.

After college:

- Medical school: 4 years

- Residency in pediatrics: 3 years

A total of 11 years of college and medical training are required.

After completing medical school, one must pass the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2 (CK) to obtain a medical license. To become board-certified, pediatricians must also pass a board certification examination administered by the American Board of Pediatrics. Some pediatricians choose to pursue additional sub-specialization (e.g. pediatric cardiology, pediatric nephrology, etc.), which may require additional fellowship training after completing residency.
