Cal State Long Beach's History and Social Science requirement includes one year of U.S. history, one semester of civics or American government and at least one year of a social science.
The English requisite includes four years of college preparatory English composition and literature.
The university recommends Algebra I, geometry and Algebra II or a course in some higher mathematics. One course should be taken each year.
Two laboratory sciences, one in a biological science and one in a physical science, are required. Two years of study is desired.
At least two years of the same foreign language must be taken, and English is not acceptable. American Sign Language is accepted as an alternative.
One year of a visual and performing art is required to gain admission. Acceptable examples include dance, drama, theater and music.
The university needs at least one year in a college preparatory class of the student's choosing, which has not been described above.
The preceding requirements are general to the school and apply only to prospective undergraduates. Individual departments within the university often have additional requirements. A number of special programs assist nontraditional students, such as disabled, international, and transfer applicants in the transition to college at Cal State Long Beach.
