Veterans Administration GI Bill Schools

The GI Bill provides education benefits for veterans and active-duty service members. Originally developed for veterans of World War II, the GI Bill was first revamped in 1984 and again in 2009. As of 2011, there are currently two versions of the GI Bill, and eligible benefit recipients need to decide which version best meets their specific eligibility and needs. There are plenty of educational institutions where GI Bill benefits can be used, including online schools.
  1. American Military University

    • The American Military University offers more than 100 online undergraduate and graduate degree and certification programs for active-duty service members and veterans. It helps students develop their careers within the military and also helps students transition to the civilian workplace. The online nature of the courses, makes them particularly suitable for study by those service members deployed abroad on active-duty, who have Internet access.

    DeVry University

    • DeVry University offers campus-based and online education programs. It offers associate, bachelor and graduate degrees in wide-ranging subjects, including electronics, computer technology and business administration. DeVry has 90 campus locations across the United States.

    Lincoln College

    • Lincoln College of Technology offers diplomas and associate degree courses in automotive, business, cosmetology, culinary arts, health sciences, information technology, and skilled trades. Lincoln College has campuses in Denver, Colorado, West Palm Beach, Florida; Marietta, Georgia; Norcross, Georgia; Henderson, Nevada; Melrose Park, Illinois; and Indianapolis, Indiana. Many courses are also available for online study.

    Choice

    • If you served after Sept. 10, 2001, you can choose between the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post 9/11 GI Bill. According to the GI Bill website, "the percentage of benefits you qualify for is based on the length of your military service, the state where your college resides, if the college is a private or public school, and if you are taking resident classes, online, or a combination of both." It is important to understand the differences between the two programs and the differences in benefits dependent upon the college. The GI Bill website provides a wealth of information and can be contacted with specific questions.
