During the first four years of college, students typically major in animal science or a related field. They take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and English. They also gain experience working with animals through volunteer or internship opportunities.
After completing their undergraduate degree, students must apply to and be accepted into a veterinary school. Veterinary school is four years long and includes coursework in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, surgery, and clinical medicine. Students also complete clinical rotations in different areas of veterinary medicine, such as small animal medicine, large animal medicine, and equine medicine.
After graduating from veterinary school, students must complete a one-year internship under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. During their internship, they gain experience in diagnosing and treating animals and performing surgeries.
After completing their internship, veterinarians are eligible to take the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE). Once they have passed the NAVLE, they are licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States.
In some countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia, it takes five years of study to become a vet, including four years of university coursework and one year of clinical training.
