The Best Photography & Graphic Design Schools in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is home to several highly ranked art schools, including three schools ranked among the nation's top 50 fine arts schools by U.S. News & World Report in 2008. The magazine compiled the rankings based on the results of a peer assessment survey of current art school deans. Students at Pennsylvania's top-ranked art schools can pursue work in graphic design and photography while working toward undergraduate and or graduate degrees. Several of these programs emphasize an interdisciplinary approach, while others require that students work within a particular field, such as photography or graphic design.
  1. Carnegie Mellon School of Art

    • The School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduates work toward the professional Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. The school emphasizes an inclusive and interdisciplinary approach to art making, and only offers loosely defined concentrations such as electronic and time-based work and contextual practice. All undergraduates must complete a foundation program in the first two years before selecting a concentration and beginning more advanced work. Graduate students can enter the interdisciplinary three-year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree program. Graduate students are encouraged to take courses in other schools and departments within the university. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked Carnegie Mellon seventh among the nation's fine arts graduate schools, and 5th in the graphic design field.

as well as multi-media fields. The school's two-year MFA program is also interdisciplinary, and students do not have to select a particular concentration.
