Auburn University's education department is one of the best in the nation. According to the 2010, U.S. News & World Report rankings of schools of education, Auburn's education program ranked 66th among all schools of education nationwide. At the doctoral level, Auburn offers the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The University of Alabama (UA) in Tuscaloosa is also nationally ranked for its education program. UA was ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2010 as the No. 79 education program in the nation. The University of Alabama offers both the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and the Ph.D. The Ed.D. degree program requires 72 additional hours beyond the master's degree. Of these hours, students are required to take 12 hours in education administration and 12 hours in quantitative or qualitative research. The Ph.D. requires 75 hours beyond the master's degree. Areas of study within both programs include educational finance, personnel administration, superintendency and leadership, instructional supervision and mentoring, operational and strategic planning, advanced educational law, politics in education, advanced research, major issues and trends, educational facilities planning and supervision and contemporary political and economic issues in education.

Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama, although not nationally ranked, is the only other Alabama education department offering a doctorate in the field. Alabama A&M offers a Ph.D. in reading and literacy that is designed to prepare the Ph.D. candidate to teach others in the field how to improve literacy and reading at all educational levels from Pre-K through grade 12. The program is a 72- to 75-credit-hour program. Areas of study include trends and issues in reading and literacy, assessment, quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, curriculum in reading and literacy, leadership in school program development, advanced clinical application and advanced study in content area reading.
