Public Health Administration Degrees

Demand for professionals in health care administration will increase by 16 percent from 2008 through 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. One segment of the industry is public health administration, managing government, non-profit and other health agencies. Colleges offer degrees in public health administration to prepare students for the field. A master's degree is preferred by employers, although a bachelor's degree is sufficient for some jobs.

    • The University of California at Berkeley is a public institution located 10 miles from San Francisco. Home to more than 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the university received the 21st place ranking among all universities from U.S. News and World Report magazine in 2010. Admission is highly selective; less than a quarter of applicants are accepted, according to the 2009 edition of Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The School of Public Health maintains a waiting list of approximately 300 students who wish to enroll in the bachelor's degree program in public health. It requires students to study biology, nutrition, genetics, plagues, immunology, psychology, sociology and politics. Students can also take electives in fields related to administration, such as health economics, program and policy design, social welfare and budgeting. Berkeley also offers master's and doctoral degrees in public health administration.

    Tulane University

    • Located in New Orleans, Louisiana, Tulane University is a private, nonsectarian institution with more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report awarded the school 50th place among all universities in the United States. Among the courses required for the university's public health undergraduate program are mathematics, public health communications, disease ecology, public health systems design, public policy practice information, policy, environmental health sciences, health systems management, bio statistics and epidemiology. All undergraduates must participate in an internship or complete a research thesis. The university also offers a five-year program that allows students to graduate with both a bachelor's and master's degree in public health. Tulane also grants doctoral degrees in the field.

    Ithaca College

    • Founded in 1892, Ithaca College is a private, non-religious college located 250 miles northwest of New York City in the small town setting of Ithaca. The college is home to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students. The school offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in public policy, which features classes in political science, anthropology, sociology and economics. Students also complete a minor and can opt for a complementary field like business or health care management. All students must complete an internship with a local health care agency or organization to graduate. Study abroad opportunities in London, England and Valencia, Spain are available for all students.
