What Can a Person Do With a Bachelor of Arts Degree?

A Bachelor of Arts degree can provide the foundation for a career in many fields, or it might be the means to graduate school. Because a BA degree focuses on the liberal arts or humanities, and provides a wider perspective than a Bachelor of Science, the possibilities for a career may be less obvious, but they are plentiful.
  1. Jobs

    • Depending on your field of study, you will meet the qualification of having a bachelor’s degree for many jobs. The University of Texas’ Career Exploration Center has a handy list of brochures called, “What Can I Do with a Major in…" for each college. For example, a job seeker with a BA in English likely will have skills such as writing, editing, communicating, researching, information management, understanding diverse viewpoints and critical thinking. Therefore, job possibilities include being a book publicist, publications editor, communications manager, grant writer, public relations specialist or patient advocate.

    Graduate School

    • Some college graduates may be planning to continue their studies in graduate school. Someone with a BA in English or philosophy may intend to go to law school, for instance. It is important to talk with career counselors, industry recruiters, and personnel directors to get an idea of the prospects in the coming years for people with advanced degrees in your chosen field.

    Internships

    • Another option for college grads with a Bachelor of Arts degree is to pursue an internship at a company where you are interested in working. Even with a degree, you may need to bring some additional experience to complement your academic accomplishments. Internships allow you to gain work experience, add a job to your resume, and provide opportunities to make yourself more visible to potential employers.

    Start a Business

    • Perhaps you have an idea for starting a business. For many, starting a business straight out of college may be foolish. But if you have business acumen, know what type of business you want to run, and are willing to work hard, you might be ready. Being a recent graduate may just mean you have a head start on others your age.

    Enlist to Serve

    • If you are interested in an alternative to the above options after college, you might be interested in AmeriCorps VISTA, the Peace Corps or the military. AmeriCorps VISTA works to eliminate poverty in the United States. Volunteers work in low-income areas and are given hands-on opportunities to handle real world challenges. By joining the Peace Corps, graduates have the opportunity to work in one of 77 countries on areas such as education, youth outreach and community development, the environment and information technology. Another option for some people might be to consider joining the military.
