Majors That Improve Verbal & Reading Ability

While it is not a good idea to choose a college major based solely on a desire to improve your verbal and reading abilities, there are a number of major areas of study in which such improvement occurs naturally in the process of learning other relevant skills.
  1. Communications/Journalism

    • Communications and journalism studies are superb choices for those who wish to improve verbal and reading skills. These majors teach a student to communicate ideas effectively, read at high levels and understand material more quickly. A communications or journalism major may become a corporate spokesperson, a government official or a journalist.

    Theater Degree

    • Theater majors must be able to read and interpret a variety of works, from Shakespeare to modern plays, to skillfully convey the meaning and emotion behind the words in their performances. Because actors spend large amounts of time reading and rehearsing to deliver lines smoothly and impart a writer's intended message, they naturally become better readers and communicators.

    Philosophy

    • Philosophy courses teach students methodologies for structuring and answering complex questions. Courses in logic and philosophy improve reasoning skills, making students better communicators by teaching them to argue a point rationally. Pursuing a philosophy degree requires students to read texts from philosophers through the ages and to present and debate some of the most perplexing questions mankind has ever pondered.
