The New School for Music, founded in 1916, trains all ages of classical musicians to become professional artists. According to The New School for Music, founder David Mannes believed that music education needs to be available to anyone interested in learning. Programs offered by various divisions include preparatory education for students starting as young as age 4, extensions for anyone interested in music, summer programs and institutes. Undergraduate and graduate programs are available through the college division. Admissions are highly competitive, applications are preferably submitted online and students must audition as part of the selection process.

Since 1917-1918 the Manhattan School of Music has taught students in voice, piano, all orchestral instruments, conducting, jazz, composition, accompanying, guitar, saxophone and organ. Students can receive a degree or diploma in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. The Precollege Division of Manhattan School of Music is a music program for students ages 5 to 18, held all day on Saturdays, to introduce children to various formats of music through specialized programs. According to Manhattan School of Music, it is an exceptional place for students to launch their professional career. Admissions for all of the programs require auditions, and at the college level students must submit an application and supporting documents.

The New York City Guitar School's goal is for every person involved in its programs to be strengthened in spirit and mind, and most importantly, to be able to rock. Adults are offered a variety of lessons and classes that include guitar, ukulele, Brazilian guitar, blues guitar, songwriting, lead, classical, flamenco and bass guitar. Classes for children ages 8 to 17 include rock guitar and teen rock band. Private lessons are available for adults and children. Applicants may register online, by phone or in person, and a satisfaction guarantee is offered for full tuition reimbursement. No musical experience or note reading is required to join. Instruments are free to use in class, and guitar rentals are also available through the school.
