The first BS program in renewable energy in North America was established in 2005 at the Oregon Institute of Technology. Students in a renewable-energy program combine foundation studies in physics, math and chemistry with upper-level courses in renewable-energy-related areas such as biofuels, wind power and photovoltaics.
A BS in renewable energy program aims to impart students with math, science and engineering abilities. Graduates are expected to be able to use engineering tools in order to implement sustainable-energy solutions.
Students who complete renewable-energy degree programs can seek employment at utility companies and engineering firms, according to the Oregon Institute of Technology's website. Renewable-energy program graduates can also pursue careers in fields such as green buildings, photovoltaics or wind energy.
