Good Ideas for an Honors Thesis

Writing an honors thesis for college can be a formidable task. The requirements for an honors thesis vary by institution, but typically the thesis is a paper substantially longer than a regular research paper. In some cases the thesis can also be an art project or some other creative enterprise. Its primary purpose is to give students an opportunity to work closely with a faculty member on a piece of substantial research and possibly to prepare for graduate school.
  1. Building on Existing Research

    • The topic of an honors thesis typically varies according to your major field of study. Therefore, the number of possibilities for a thesis are nearly limitless, as long as they are approved by the college. When putting together a thesis proposal, it can be helpful to read widely in your subject before making a proposal. Doing so will open your eyes to the other research and potentially reveal your thesis topic.

Look for research that has flaws in its methodology and write a thesis that counters the findings of that research. This is how scholars typically develop their own research interests -- through constant scholarly dialogue with one another. You can also look for existing research that you may agree with but that is underdeveloped or incomplete. You can add to the discussion by filling in any gaps that you think may exist. This type of research works especially well in fields such as history, philosophy, religion, anthropology and some of the other social sciences.

    Statistical Experiments

    • Many of the sciences and social sciences are heavily dependent on statistical research for their research conclusions. Conduct a substantial experiment based on an original experiment that will provide insight into a field of study such as psychology, sociology, biology, physics or any of the other sciences. You will still need to read widely in your field to make sure your experiment has not been done before; you will also need to see if your experiment provides a repudiation of other work in the field or if it supports the work of a particular scholar or group of scholars.

An example of a possible experiment you can conduct is to use surveys of a particular group of people or demographic, asking them very detailed questions about their own patterns of behavior, ethical norms, buying habits or any other area.

    Creative Projects

    • If you are pursuing careers in fields such as art, film or music, another possible direction to go with your honors thesis is to complete an original creative project. If your field is art, you can complete a painting or sculpture or even complete an entire group of paintings or sculptures for an exhibit. If your field is fashion design, you can create an entire line of clothing. Other creative fields such as interior design, architecture and music all lend themselves to this kind of thesis. Even film studies majors can get creative and produce their own short documentary. The possibilities are only limited by your own creativity.
