Ideas For a History Thesis

A history thesis is a paper typically written by a college undergraduate or graduate student who is majoring or minoring in history. When you write a history thesis, you want to pick an area of history you find particularly interesting and then break that area down to a specific topic. Then, ask a question that researching that topic might help you answer. You could ask how this one event in history changed the course of a nation and if it was for the better or for the worse. The paper typically has five chapters with every bit of information supported by research.
  1. World War II

    • Plenty of topics exist in the World War II area that you can write about. For example, you can write about how the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese changed the face of America. You can write about Holocaust survivors that are still alive and what their views are like after their experiences. You do not have to focus on the bigger topics of World War II. You can focus on the smaller topics, even though those topics might require more research. If you have family who served in the war, study what platoon or company they served with and how that platoon or company made an impact.

    Religion

    • Religion has played a major role throughout history, causing numerous conflicts. You can choose a specific topic from this area. You can write about the Crusades and how much influence the Catholic Church had in that time. You can write about the history of cults, using Jonestown and the Branch Davidians as an example. Write about the difference between the Protestant witch hunts and the Catholic witch hunts. You can go darker and write about the foundation of the Church of Satan. Explain how Buddhism and the actions of previous members have helped shape the role of the Orient today. Explain the centuries-long feud between Muslims and Jews.

    Women's History

    • Women have not had an easy road throughout history. You can write about the struggles and persecution women faced during the Inquisition. You can write about Susan B. Anthony and her fight for equal rights for women in the United States. You can take a more modern approach and write about Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin and how they have affected the role of women in politics. Write about the challenges women faced being in the workforce in World War II and then being thrust back into the homes after the war ended.

    Medieval History

    • Medieval history spans the history of Europe from the fifth Century to the 15th century. Write about how the private lives of English kings and queens affected the people they were ruling over. Write about the challenges that kings and queens faced in politics. Write about the difficulties tradesmen and farmers faced in providing for their families. You can focus on the military aspect and write about the training knights and squires would have had to go through. You can focus on what sort of military strategies existed, how they worked and how many times those strategies were successful.

    Ancient Civilizations

    • Roman, Greek and Egyptian are the most common ancient civilizations researched. There is still much to learn about them. Write about what the day-to-day experience of a Roman soldier was like, both on and off the battlefield. Write about Alexander and what sort of impact his world conquest had on history. You can write about how the frequent practice of incest may have contributed to some of the downfalls of Egyptian kings and queens.
