How to Help Major Behavior Problems in the Classroom

How can teachers teach when confronted with disrespectful, unmotivated students? Teachers now have to deal with apathetic and unmanageable students. Threats of violence in schools and colleges are undermining the morale of instructors, who need every available resource to promote an academic atmosphere in the classroom so that students can learn. Instructions

  1. Defusing Anger in the Classroom

    • 1

Be positive and remain calm when a student becomes belligerent. Take the student out of the classroom and talk to him privately to avoid getting into a power struggle in front of the class.

    • 2

Let the student know that you care about what is bothering him but that you cannot allow class disruptions that interfere with other students' right to learn. Allow the student back into the room if he calms down.

    • 3

Set up an appointment with the disruptive student so that you can get to know him better. Usually when a student knows that you care about him, he will become more cooperative. Discuss what changes need to occur and listen to what the student has to say.

    • 4

Draw up a contract for the student to sign when you meet with him. List the improvements you expect to see in the student's behavior. Frame your words in a positive way. For example, instead of saying "stop cursing," say "talk politely."

    • 5

Refer the student to an administrator if he continues be disruptive. He should not be permitted to return to class until after a hearing.
