Degrees in Winemaking

Winemaking can be a very challenging process. First, the instruments and the grapes must be highly sterilized because bacteria can ruin the wine. Second, wine must be properly sealed so that it can ferment for a long period of time without contamination. Various universities offer degree programs for students interested in either studying winemaking or making wine themselves.
  1. Washington State Bachelor Degree

    • Washington State University has an undergraduate degree in viticulture and enology, the study of grapes and wine. Students learn about techniques that help farmers produce high-quality grapes and also learn about fermentation processes. Washington State has a winemaking facility.

    Washington State Masters

    • Students can also pursue a wine business management degree held by Washington State's wine business department. Students learn about wine production management and techniques for identifying market demands for wine in certain areas. Washington State University created this program specifically to promote the wine industry in Washington.

    Northwest Wine Academy

    • The Northwest Wine Academy has a program specializing in wine technology held at South Seattle Community College. While this program has three certificate programs, the university is working on developing a four-year degree program in winemaking. The community college offers both individual courses and multiple courses required to obtain certification. Students can also acquire an associate's degree in applied science with a specialization in winemaking. These winemaking programs are a part of South Seattle Community College's culinary arts program.

    Allan Hancock Bachelor's Degree

    • Allan Hancock College, which has several campuses in southern California, has a degree in viticulture and enology designed to prepare students for employment in the wine industry. The school also offers programs for students who are already in a winemaking profession and want to update their skills. Students learn about vineyard management, pest control and vineyard design and management. Students take courses that focus on winemaking equipment, wine chemistry and microorganisms and ferementation. The university also offers courses focusing on the sensory quality of wine so that students are aware of how to produce wine that will be successful.

    Umpqua Associate's Degree

    • Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, has a viticulture and enology program designed to help foster relationships between vineyards in Oregon and the academic discipline and to promote the winemaking industry in Oregon. Students can earn an associate's degree in applied science specializing in enology. Students learn about grape growing, soil science and winery practices. Students who complete this program may go on to become vineyard managers, cellar masters, winery equipment sales representatives and wine sales and promotion specialists.

    University of California Certification

    • The University of California at Davis has an online winemaking certification program. This program is designed for winemaking professionals who want to expand their skills but cannot attend courses in California. This program has courses that focus on wine quality control and analysis and wine stability.
