The Best Graduate Degree Fields

A master's degree can have a big payoff, given the right field. The top fields can earn a big boost in salary and a lot of job opportunities. In the long run, experts like Liz Pulliam Weston of MSN Money.com say a graduate degree will earn you more money.
  1. Business

    • Getting an MBA can be quite valuable to people seeking management positions within a company. Many heads of companies, financial analysts and economists have their MBA's. An October 2008 article in "Businessweek" puts the bill for an MBA at more than $100,000, but graduates say it's worth the cost, considering three years after they received their degree they are still paying it off. Many people with degrees in liberal arts fields or the sciences get an MBA, making them more marketable.

    Engineering

    • A master's degree in engineering -- from agricultural, nuclear and mechanical -- is a best bet because of the high demand. Advancing technology and increased productivity means companies rely heavily on engineers to develop products and services. A graduate degree in engineering keeps students up to date on the latest information and trends. Many people seeking a Master's in this field have an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, math or physics.

    Computer Science

    • With just about everyone relying on computers, an advanced degree here can launch your career as well as your pay. The median income of people with a computer science degree is more than $110,000, and people with these degrees serve a variety of fields including IT and software engineers. A May 2010 survey by "Forbes" calls computer science the "second-best advanced degree."

    Education

    • A graduate degree in education can be useful for teachers on just about any level, as many school districts require one in order to make more money. Teachers in math and science are always in demand, but for teachers who have specialized training in things like special education, the job market is very good, according to a July 2010 article in "The Boston Globe "
