The inch is the American standard unit of length, also used in other countries such as England. It is part of the older Imperial system, which was first defined in 1824 as part of the British Weights and Measures Act. A newer International System of Units was defined in 1960 and the unit of length in this system is the meter. The meter is divided into 100 centimeters, each of which equals 10 millimeters. The International System of Units is now used almost globally, although the United States, Burma, and Liberia are still using older systems.
