Criminology Distance Learning Colleges

Criminology is the study of crime as it relates to individuals and society. Online programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students learn through a variety of mediums, including online streaming, DVDs, podcasts, textbooks and discussion boards.

    • Portland State University is located in Portland, Oregon and offers an online bachelor's degree program in criminology and criminal justice. Students must complete 180 credits and are required to take courses in policing in America, punishment and corrections, American courts, crime analysis and theories of crime. An internship is also required to prepare students for careers and offers professional experience in the field.

    Regis University

    • Located in Denver, Colorado, Regis University offers a 128-credit bachelor of science in criminology. Courses are available in five- and eight-week increments and teach students about crime analysis, crime behavior, homeland security, disaster response and leadership. Course requirements include psychology of crime, family violence, perspectives in terrorism, criminal deviance and professional ethics. Seniors are required to complete a capstone project and have the option of completing graduate level courses and transferring them to a master's degree program.

    Florida State University

    • Florida State University offers an online master's degree in criminology that requires students to complete 36 credits of coursework. While core courses focus on criminal justice theories and research, elective opportunities involve criminal law, criminal justice administration, police and society, penology, victimology and forensic science in investigation. Students learn through textbooks, media and study guides. Graduates of the program are eligible to teach criminal justice in community colleges throughout the state of Florida.

    University of California-Irvine

    • The University of California-Irvine offers an online master of advanced study in criminology, law and society. The program is designed to prepare graduates for leadership positions within the criminal justice and social services fields. Course topics cover areas involving legal institutions and society, crime and social deviance, organizational analysis, managerial communications, public policy and white-collar crime. Students are required to participate in a five-day introductory course on campus and a capstone project in order to graduate.
