Undergraduate science research must meet certain standards. Throughout middle school and high school, science projects were experimental and flexible, letting the student develop creative scientific skills. At the undergraduate level, you must produce measurable and meaningful observations in your field of expertise, whether that be biology, chemistry, anatomy, physical science, earth science, physics or computer science. Using the scientific method, you must formulate a hypothesis, write out detailed steps to a controlled study, collect results and analyze them to detect the strengths and weaknesses in your process. Develop and reproduce your project using multimedia --- such as text, pictures, audio and video --- to achieve a professional result.
An undergraduate in computer science is a student of the digital world, studying algorithms, audio, video, robotics and virtual reality, among other topics. To prepare for this project, study existing robots and the capabilities of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence in real life is not how it appears in the movies. Robots cannot yet think for themselves, reason or come up with original thoughts. Computers, however, can solve isolated problems by choosing the most efficient answer out of several possible answers. For an undergraduate project, attempt to build a robot that must choose between two separate actions. An example of this kind of a robot is an automatic dog food and water dispenser. This robot has two actions to choose between, dispense food or dispense water. Attempt to arrange a timed, sensor or remote control mechanism that will set the machine up to dispense food and water at the proper time and into the proper bowls.
A research project in biology is concerned with plants and animals on a cellular and physical level. For your research project, choose a species to study in its natural environment. You should live near a park or forest where you can observe this species on a daily basis. To make the project interesting, choose a species that will be undergoing change, such as a migration, a physical change or a group of births. Document your observations in writing, take pictures and video and audio samples. Before writing your observations, read what other types of observations have been written on this species so that you can provide original material.
Chemistry is the science of matter and the reactions between interacting chemicals. For an undergraduate research project in chemistry, you will have to provide measurable data on a chemical level. This does not mean that your project has to be limited to chemical equations. Instead, make chemistry relevant to everyday life by studying the effect of a chemical on human performance. Pull from a sample of smokers or avid coffee drinkers. Observe how the chemicals in cigarettes or coffee influence human performance in a physical or mental activity, such as a sports game or a written exam. Your sample must be large to produce significant data. You can choose to have controls, such as sex and age range, to collect uniform results that can be compared to existing studies.
