Aircraft Carriers in the Gulf War

The Gulf War occurred in and around Iraq during the early 1990s, and aircraft carriers were essential to the U.S. and United Nations offensive. Six U.S. aircraft carriers were on active duty in the Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf and Red Sea during the operations in Iraq. The carriers launched thousands of successful aircraft deployments and dropped millions of pounds of ordinance during the conflict. Four of the six carriers surpassed Naval benchmarks and records during the Gulf War.
  1. CVA-66 America

    • The CV-66 America, aka "USS America", had advanced intelligence processing capabilities during the Gulf War which was unmatched by any other ship. The advanced battle system set benchmarks for naval warfare. The America was the only ship to operate on both sides of the Arabian Peninsula during the conflict. In 2005, the USS America was scuttled southeast of Cape Hatteras and was the largest ship ever to be sunk.

    CV-67 John F. Kennedy

    • The CV-67 John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier was the flagship of the Red Sea Battle Force during Operation Desert Shield of the Gulf War. The JFK delivered over 3 million pounds of ordinance during Operation Desert Storm while dispatching nearly 3000 units, falling just short of the Theodore Roosevelt's ordinance and dispatch numbers. The JFK was decommissioned in 2007 after 40 years of service.

    CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt

    • The CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt arrived in the Persian Gulf in the early 1990s during the Gulf War. The aircraft carrier dropped nearly 5 million pounds of ordinance and dispatched over 4,000 units, more than any over carrier during the operation. The Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the Battle Effectiveness Award, known as a "Battle E", for her achievements during the Gulf War. In August 2009, a 2.4 billion dollar contract for overhauling the Theodore Roosevelt was agreed upon.

    CV-60 Saratoga

    • The CV-60 Saratoga was stationed in the Red Sea during the Gulf War, and was the oldest ship of the Red Sea fleet. 21 losses were suffered on the Saratoga when it collided with a ferry boat during the war. The veteran ship traversed the Suez Canal a record 6 times during the conflicts in the gulf. The Saratoga was decommissioned in August, 1994.
