Write a speech attempting to persuade your classmates and instructor that aliens did, indeed, land in the United States and are being held secretly at Area 51, located about 100 miles outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. There is a wealth of information available on the conspiracy theories surrounding Area 51 that you can couple with satellite images of the area and supposed pictures of the site's interior. Because this site has a lot of wacky theories attached to it, ensure that you perform adequate research to find the best-supported ones.
You could write a persuasive speech purporting that the Olympic Games should be modeled after its heritage in that the athletes should compete in the nude. Use ancient sources, like the Perseus Digital Library Project (see Resources) to create the scene of ancient Greek Olympics, and provide examples relating to how the modern games would be enhanced by nudity, including increased aerodynamism and less opportunity for cheating. Be sure to discuss whether this rule should apply to all events in both the winter and summer Olympics.
For your persuasive speech, you could attempt to persuade your audience that you, and only you, should be elected as the president of the United States. Use your speech to establish your platform. Be sure to touch on hot topics, such as what you will do to boost the economy, how you will stop corporations from gaming the system, how you will combat global warming, and what approach you will use to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
For a twist, you could write a persuasive speech attempting to convince your classmates that persuasive speeches are effective means for persuading. Find examples of effective persuasive speeches in history, such as those by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and use them to elucidate your points. Use reputable sources to argue that persuasive speeches, when handled correctly, are effective at selling anything, whether that thing is an idea or a product. Using this as a topic is difficult, but effectively funny if it is handled correctly.
