Contact professional organizations in the boat building industry to locate training programs in this field. For example, visit the websites of the Association of Marine Technicians (AMTECH), the American Boat builders Association (ABA), the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) or the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). If you are interested in marine engineering, check to see what programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, or ABET (see Resources).
Ask your schools of choice if they offer diploma programs or degree programs. Consider completing a diploma or associate degree program in boat design if you want to finish school in about one to two years and land entry-level positions in this field. These positions include those of a parts associate, apprentice mechanic, entry-level technician or boat and motor rigger. Otherwise, contact four-year bachelor's degree programs in marine engineering or naval architecture if you want to work as a self-employed boat builder or find employment with manufacturing design firms.
Apply to the school of your choice. Submit a copy of your high school transcript or GED, and be prepared to also submit copies of scores from standardized tests. In addition, take your potential college's placement test on writing/reading or math if required, according to Cape Fear Community College in North Carolina, which offers a diploma program in boat building.
Take classes on topics such as marine drafting, basic mathematics, deck geometry, fiberglass boat construction and marine engines. In addition, study computer-aided ship design, principles of naval architecture, resistance, propulsion and hull geometry if completing a degree program in the boat building industry. Also, review contemporary wooden boat building, reports the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building in Washington.
Complete a practicum that allows you to tool, construct and outfit vessels during your training program if available. If not, ask your program or school about local internship opportunities that will give you hands-on experience in the boat building field.
