International Economics Degrees

Many schools in the United States only offer advanced degrees in international economics since it's a specialization within the field of economics itself. A few schools offer the major to undergraduate students. International economists study macro- and micro-economics, as well as finance, economic theory, international trade and, sometimes, history and foreign languages. Some degree programs offer specializations within the field of international economics -- subfields such as international finance and international development.
  1. Georgia State University

    • In June of 2010, Georgia State University and the University of Venice were granted $1 million from the U.S. Department of Education and the European Union to design and implement a degree program in international economics and foreign languages. The first class to embark on this dual degree program began in the fall of 2010, with the aim of becoming economists functional in multiple languages and cultural settings. Students interested in the program apply during their sophomore or junior years and graduate with degrees from both universities and a year of experience in the opposite country.

    Yale University

    • Yale University offers a Masters of Arts in International and Development Economics. Potential graduate students can choose from two tracks: one through Yale's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and the other through Yale's School of Public Health. Applications must be submitted to either of those schools along with the International and Development Economics program. Core courses consist of subjects such as analysis of micro- and macro-economics, economic development, international economics and statistics. Electives can come from the mathematics, management, law or economics departments.

    Johns Hopkins University

    • Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore offers M.A. degrees in international economics. The Masters of Arts program requires coursework in basic micro-economics and macro-economics, as well as international trade and monetary economic theory, and two electives in the international economics department. Students may take an oral exam to graduate with honors from the program, and students with strong interests in quantitative methods and economic theory, international finance and development economics may specialize in one of these areas.

    University of West Georgia

    • The University of West Georgia offers a Bachelor's of Arts degree in international economics affairs. Undergraduate students majoring in international economics must complete the same core academic requirements as students in other departments: English, mathematics, sciences, history or liberal or fine arts. Degree-specific courses include higher-level economics courses, as well as politics and history courses and a global internship option.
