How to Solve the Measures of Position Using a TI-83

A position function is an equation that describes the position of an object or particle as a function of time. The position of the object can easily be measured using a TI-83 graphing calculator by graphing the function then using a table to automatically plot points on a graph. All you need to do is enter the x-value (elapsed time) of the function and the calculator determines the position of the object at that point in the form of a y-value.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Y=" button and move the cursor to the first open slot.

    • 2

Enter the position function into the slot and press "2nd" then "GRAPH." This opens an (x, y) table.

    • 3

Enter an x-value (representing time) into the left column marked "X." Press "ENTER." The value of the y-coordinate (representing distance traveled) will appear in the right column marked "Y-1."

    • 4

Continue entering as many x-values as you would like. The y-value is the "measure" that an object has moved from its initial position, at a given x-value.
