How to Make a Stat Plot on a TI-83

Creating a statistics plot on a TI-83 calculator is helpful if you want to display the data on a graph or perform statistical analysis, such as regression, on it. Though high school and college students commonly use the TI-83 for high level math calculations, you can use the TI-83 to take a list of paired numbers, such as "(5,2), (6,3), (9,5)" and graph its corresponding Stat Plot.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on your TI-83 calculator.

    • 2

Turn off any pre-existing plots by pressing the "Y=" key and then cursor down to any highlighted lines or plot numbers. Press "ENTER" to deactivate them.

    • 3

Input x values for your list. Press the "STAT" key, press "1", cursor to the "L1" list, press "CLEAR" and then "ENTER." This list should now be empty. Enter your x values.

    • 4

Input y values for your list. Move the cursor to the "L2" list, press "CLEAR" and then "ENTER." Enter your y values.

    • 5

Enable "Plot 1" by pressing the "2nd" key, pressing "Y=", pressing "1" and then "ENTER."

    • 6

Choose a stat plot format, such as scatter plot, by pressing "down" and then the "ENTER" key.

    • 7

Set up the stat plot by pressing "down," "2nd" and "1" to link the x axis of the graph with list 1. Press "down," "2nd" and "2" to link the y axis of the graph with list 2.

    • 8

Plot the points on a graph by pressing "ZOOM" and then "9." You can change the spacing by pressing "WINDOW" and entering different values for "Xscl=" and "Yscl=." You can trace the different data points by pressing "TRACE" and then "right."
