How to Do an Internal Assessment in Biology

Students studying biology or other sciences are assessed in two ways when it comes to grading their performance. First, there is the external assessment. This comprises of their scores on end-of-course examinations. This will usually make up most of the final mark. The second part is the internal assessment, or their performance on class work throughout their course. This typically makes up around a quarter of the total mark, so is an important element of their final mark.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the criteria for internal assessment laid down for the IB testing process. These are standardized so that any student taking the biology course will be assessed in the same way, regardless of location.

    • 2

Grade laboratory work by assessing how students have performed in the five main areas required. These are: design, data collection and processing, conclusion and evaluations, manipulative skills and personal skills.

    • 3

Mark students according to the three grades available for each criteria. This shows whether they have completed each aspect involved, partially completed it or not completed it at all. Each level is worth a set mark of two, one or zero.

    • 4

Send samples of graded lab reports to the International Baccalaureate Organization for checking. The IBO will decide whether the marks awarded have been too strict or too lenient and, if so, will adjust the marks accordingly.

    • 5

Assess each student at least twice in the major criteria and ensure a minimum of 60 hours lab work has been done and graded over the two years of the course, as required by the IB.
