How to Ace an Exam in Economics

Economics is the complex, integrated study of goods, services, monetary exchange and consumer behavior. Studying economics is similar to learning physics, as both subjects use formulas and equations to explain real-world events. Acing an economics exam requires movement beyond rote memorization to demonstrating correct application of formulas and theories. Comprehensive studying and practice is key to achieving a high score on any economics examination.

Instructions

    • 1

Start studying early. Reviewing the material at least two weeks before the exam affords time for clarification of unknown topics.

    • 2

Utilize available practice tests and study guides. Many professors offer study guides or use practice test questions in the index of your textbook. Record questions you have about a specific problem or concept so you know which areas need clarification.

    • 3

Review your class notes. During class, accurately recording notes can take priority over synthesizing and understanding the material. Review your notes slowly and allow yourself as much time as necessary to absorb and understand the concepts presented.

    • 4

Clarify and discuss unknown topics or concepts in detail with an astute friend, teaching assistant or professor. Identifying your areas of weakness is only beneficial if you strengthen those areas.

    • 5

Complete the easiest questions first, then move toward the more difficult problems. Ensure partial credit by attempting every question, even if you're uncertain about the answer.
