What Should Freshmen Bring to College?

Deciding what you need to bring with you to college as an incoming freshman can be a daunting task. Chances are that you've never lived away from home before, meaning that dorm life is going to be a crash course in self-sufficiency. Rather than packing your car with everything you may or may not need, it's a good idea to pare down what you bring along to the absolute essentials.
  1. Toiletries

    • Regardless of whether your dorm has a communal shower and restroom or private bathrooms in each room, it's a good idea to bring along the essentials such as tissue paper just in case, Personal hygiene items you use regularly should also be included in your toiletry packing. These include a toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush, nail clippers, shampoo and body soap, and any other items of importance to your daily grooming routine.

    Clothing

    • Plan for at least as much seasonally-appropriate clothing as you will need until you make it back home again. If, for instance, you are attending school in Michigan during the winter, your wardrobe should include a heavy winter coat, boots, long pants and sweaters, as well as your usual underclothes. On the other hand, attending school in Arizona in the summer calls for lightweight clothing such as shorts, sandals and T-shirts.

    Living Essentials

    • Essentials for your dorm room are varied. Check with your school to determine if your dorm room will have a microwave or a small refrigerator, and if these items are allowed in the dorm. Along with these items, bring along a few dishes such as cups, plates, silverware and bowls. Plan to have at least two place settings available in case you have company in your dorm room for dinner. In addition to appliances, it's a good idea to bring along a clothes hamper and at least two sets of bed clothes, including sheets, a pillow and comforters. Most dorms use single-size beds.

    Educational Needs

    • A laptop computer is a practical necessity in college, but bring along a security cable to protect your laptop from walking off while you're not watching. In addition, make sure you bring along plenty of pencils, paper and notebooks. These items tend to be expensive when purchased from your college bookstore. You'll want to have access to a good quality calculator, as well.

    Financial Needs

    • Avoid using a credit card whenever possible. If you don't already have one, open a checking account and keep a debit card on you at all times. It is also helpful to keep a $20 bill in your wallet in case of emergencies.
