The School of Education at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., is a relative newcomer to the field; it opened in 2007. Even so, this SOE is already highly ranked nationally. In fact, by 2013 its graduate research programs have obtained more outside funding than any similar programs nationwide. Harvard University's Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Mass., is extensive. About 900 students are enrolled in its 18 master's and two doctoral programs. In addition, more than 3,000 teachers and administrators annually take advantage of the school's professional development opportunities.
Nashville, Tenn., is home to the Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University. As part of both its research program and community outreach, Peabody hosts the Susan Gray School. Children with developmental disabilities and youngsters with early warning signs of developmental delay are enrolled in the facility. The University of Virginia's Curry School of Education in Charlotte has more than 20 areas of study, including instructional technology and science, English, elementary, foreign language and special education. It offers eight degrees ranging from undergraduate to Ph.D.
The School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has many diverse academic departments. In addition to the more traditional curriculum and instruction, educational psychology and special education departments, it also hosts art, dance and kinesiology centers. The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor has a long history concerning the area's education policy. In 1817, the state granted the university oversight of Michigan's public education system. Though this agreement is no longer in place, it contributed to the founding of UM's School of Education in 1921.
The University of Texas at Austin has an extremely large College of Education. About 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in its five departments. In addition to coursework, the students have access to nine specialized campus centers and institutes. These include facilities that focus on students at risk, learning technology, fitness and sports and reading. California's Stanford University includes a Graduate School of Education. Students can complete a master's program in one year. Doctoral programs are available in five areas, including curriculum studies, technology and developmental science. The school has both an honors program and minor for interested undergraduate students, as well.
