How to Qualify for an Economic Hardship Deferment

Economic hardship deferments allow recipients of student loans to delay payments for up to 12 months. Students in a variety of circumstances, including parents and volunteers, may qualify for these hardships based on the assumption that people in some positions face economic hardship that makes it difficult to repay loans. Deferments must be reapplied for annually and you must be able to provide documentation showing that you meet the eligibility requirements. Deferments are an alternative to defaulting on a student loan.

Become a volunteer. Members of the Peace Corps can automatically receive student loan deferments. Soldiers in the armed forces as well as volunteers with the Action Programs can also defer student loans.

    • 2

Examine the possibility of an income-based deferment. If you make less than 150 percent of the Federal poverty line, you may be eligible. People who have been unable to obtain work are also eligible for deferments, though these deferments are typically for 6 months instead of a year. If you are receiving food stamps or public assistance, you are eligible for an economic deferment.

    • 3

Use your job to defer your student loans. Teachers who teach in public schools in areas deemed to have teacher shortages are eligible. Medical interns and residents, as well as students with graduate fellowships, can also defer their loans.

    • 4

Take advantage of the deferments offered to parents. Working mothers who do not earn more than $1 above minimum wage can defer. Parents who have taken time off work to care full time for a newborn or infant may also defer their loans.

    • 5

Avoid paying student loans while in school. Students enrolled at least half-time at an institution of higher learning may defer their loans.

    • 6

Fill out the form for the deferment you are requesting. See Resources for a link to deferment forms. You will likely need to call Federal Student Loan Servicing to determine where to send the forms and to ensure you've included all necessary documentation. Their phone number is 800-848-0979.
